As mentioned in an earlier post, today is Thursday and our teacher let us have our own "field trip" day. =) And this was my last day with Sara so we had plans to spend the day together starting with the London Eye. London Eye is pretty much a giant Ferris Wheel by the Houses of Parliament and you go into a capsule with a small group of people and ride around. It takes about 25 minutes to go around and you see the city. We had a day and night pass, but I will tell you about the Day first. Pros of Daytime pass: you can see everything clearly, all details and whatnot, and...well...I think that is it. Cons: it's hot being in the sun despite the a/c, there is massive glare in the capsules so it's hard to take a good picture, and everything is pretty grey. I'm sure if I hadn't gone on the night one later my opinion wouldn't be quite as tainted.
After Sara, Jourdan and I did the daytime capsule, we went to see the 4D London Eye Experience which was pretty cool. This one had bubbles and smell which was cool. There was also wind and mist like the other one for Marvel, but in this one we had to stand. It was still nifty ;)
Jourdan separated from me and Sara and we decided to take our adventure day to Camden Market. That place is SO huge. You have no idea where you are going if you have never been there before and it is definitely overwhelming. And let me tell you, there are SOOOO many owls and pocket watch necklaces that I could have just lived there, but since I was so overwhelming and kept seeing things that looked shiny, I was distracted and didn't really buy anything. The only thing I did buy was an old photograph of a young chap sitting on a bench with a KLM bag. I was pretty excited about that so I had to snag it up for my mini collection. I also bought a couple of sodas because I wanted something fun and silly as a treat. One was called Dr. Cane and the other was Darn, That's Good, Rootbeer. Both were quite tasty.
The market was closing down on us so we decided it was time to go back to where I live and visit Byron's in Hoxton Square. We put in an order for take away and then went across the street to the park where it tells us what the weather was yesterday. We enjoyed our delicious burgers on a park bench and then it was time to head back to South Bank area for the London Eye part two.
We were there a little early so we wandered around and took some photos. We watched a band for a bit and a homeless man getting his groove on to their music. We walked on the Jubilee bridge and then sat in a grassy area across from the Eye until it was dark enough for our liking. The Night Eye was so great! There are lights everywhere and all sorts of colors. You can still see all of the landmarks but now they are highlighted so it is easier to spot them in pictures. There is no glare, but it is night so you need a steady surface for some pictures. Also it is much cooler at night when the sun isn't baking on you. We also rode in the red capsule, but I couldn't tell you why there is only one and what makes it special, but we did ride in it!
Once our ride was over, we wandered again and took some more pictures. I really wanted dessert b/c we had been talking about it throughout the night but it was now late and places were closed. That left us going to M&S (Marks & Spencer's) at the Waterloo station. I opted for key lime pie but later I discovered how terrible it tasted, so that was disappointing. Sara and I said our goodbyes at the underground and it was terribly sad. It was weird for it to all be over and so fast, though I knew it would happen like that. It just didn't feel like that was the last day. It was really surreal.
I got home and said my goodbyes to Emily too. We chatted for a bit and then I was off to pack up my stuff too. Even though I was staying the weekend I had to also check out in the morning with everyone else and move to my hostel. So once I was back in my room I packed all of my stuff for the most part and then feel asleep, deciding to finish the rest in the morning =) Always a good idea ;)

A Day in the Life
Wednesday was the last day of class. We had a short lecture on British design and then we had the Grate Kultcher Kwiz where we had twenty some odd questions over what we covered. I can proudly say that I got 14 correct which was the second highest! Oh, yea! Everyone got a Cadbury chocolate medal and it was delicious ;) Class ended early and we went over to The George where our teacher once again bought us all a round. We sat and chatted for awhile as we all enjoyed our drinks (I had the hard cider) and after some pictures, Emily and I went to ISA to use the internet. I didn't stay long since Sara and I had the Beatles tour to go on at 2.
I walked down Oxford St to meet Sara and she was very hesitant to do the tour and I don't blame her. The guy that was supposed to be the guide looked really nerdy in a way that he was just hoping to find some friends but everyone was just passing him by. We talked each other into doing it and it was somewhat worth it. Afterwards we decided that we could have just gone to Abbey Road on our own since that was kind of the highlight of the tour. It wasn't a bad tour per say, it just was bad timing and as mentioned our guide was a bit of a weird fanatic. It wasn't quite the fanatic where they make you interested even if you aren't and they just love what they do, but instead like I'm sure he has purchased every Beatles memorabilia that ever existed and lives in mom's basement. He was super nice, just awkward. And what I mean by bad timing is that there was a lot of construction going on and so buildings and streets were covered or blocked and it was difficult to get a great picture. Since this was in London, this was also a lot of what happened after the Beatles blew up. It was cool and all but I think I would definitely love going to Liverpool and doing the Magical Mystery tour more (and I plan on doing that next time!). It was cool to see where the Rooftop Performance was and where Hey Jude was recorded as well as Paul McCartney's studio and Abbey Studios/Road.
After the tour we had to get ready for the ISA dinner so we went separate ways. I ran home as fast as possible and took a five minute shower, changed my clothes, and ran out the door. I totally made it on time to the station where everyone was meeting but apparently I was on the wrong side. I found a Starbucks but not THE Starbucks. I was not even five minutes late but there was no one in sight from ISA so I called Sara and then talked to Maria and found the right path for meeting people. Tom was supposed to be at the Starbucks but I must have just missed him. At least at that point I knew where I was going. I rushed to Strada and found everyone. I was dying of thirst and drank THE MOST still water imaginable. At one point I had been waiting for water foreverrrr and the waiter finally came back and was giving it to everyone else but me and went to turn around with the last water and my mouth dropped and my eyes narrowed. I was about to attack but then he turned back around and I got my water. I think all the girls thought that was funny lol. Dinner was alright...we didn't get a choice and it ended up being the same chicken meal that I had at the other Strada with Sara, but this one wasn't as good and that is probably because of being in the group. It wasn't warm and pretty dry and not much sauce but oh well. The gelato afterwards was delicious though! So that made up for it all =) The view was great too- glass windows to look at the Tower Bridge.
After dinner we went outside to take pictures with Tom and Maria. And then it was just kind of over. It was weird. It didn't feel like the trip was basically done and that people were leaving in two days. Some people gave hugs and I hadn't even realized that that was going to be the last time I saw them. It made it really sad and I felt kind of bummed out. And the dinner wasn't quite what I expected. I thought it would be more of a social thing and kind of branch out from there but it was just like here is your meal and goodbye. No more excursions and no more friends for the most part...it was so weird.
After that realization, Emily, Sara, and I went home, but when Emily and I got home we were wondering what the heck we were doing. We still had a whole evening/night to do things. The sun was still up! So instead of just kind of bumming out about it ending in our rooms we decided to have some fun instead and go out. I still had not gone out to this pub that Tom recommended called Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. I knew it was on Fleet St. and that is close to St. P's, so we went on an adventure to find it. After we went the wrong way the first time, we did stumble upon it. The entrance was in an ally and at first I was slightly confused to as if I was going in the right door so I even asked a guy that was outside smoking. When we went in the front bar was small and packed but the lady said we could go down to this other door for another bar. There were other rooms upstairs even but we never ventured in them. So we went downstairs and that place was HUGE. There are so many rooms in there and another jumbo bar downstairs. Everything was wooden and stone. It was dimly lit and rustic looking. And to top it all off they have stouts! The first place I had been to that served stouts (other than a few places that served Guiness but that doesn't count). It is mainly pale ales and hard cider in the pubs that I had been to. So needless to say I was excited and had two lol. It was the Samuel Smith Extra Stout. I was the MOST happy. Emily and I chatted for quite some time and had a lot of fun. I'm so excited that we decided to go out because it turned everything around and I found my new favorite bar. In the end it was a fabulous evening and my stout was 3 pounds 40. SOOOOO worth it. =)

Trying to make some money
Tuesday's class was on humor. We watched this show called Twenty Twelve and I thought it was hilarious. It was like watching The Office/Parks and Recreation but British and completely about the Olympics. I want to watch the whole series. It is simply brilliant. While I was watching this show, I was also enjoying some espresso and a chocolate croissant which made the experience even better.
Our teacher asked us if we want to go to the V&A for Wednesday (I've already gone) and then he threw around some other options that either cost some money or once again we had done. Then he asked us if we would just like to have Thursday off to pack or do what we want and wrap things up tomorrow. Of course, that was a crowd pleaser. So we were going to have a short class and then our fun "Grate Kultcher Kwiz" in which we would win prizes, and then have a "field trip" to whereever we wanted to go or not go on Thursday. That sounded fabulous to me!
After class Emily and I went to the ISA office for some beverages and internet at legit computers. Jourdan ended up meeting me there and then we went to Madame Tussuads. We spent some time there getting in all of our celebrity wax-ness ahaha. It was fun though! MJ was there but the lighting was so terrible for his. So hopefully I got a good one. There was an A-list room, sports, royal family, world leaders, music, Marvel characters with a 4D experience (that was really cool), a ride, and a Scream room (we didn't do that though). In the 4D experience, wind blew, water splashed us, we were punched in the back, there were lights going off, and vibrating seats. It was really sweet. Plus you have the 3D glasses and you are laying back in a chair looking at the dome. I enjoyed it!
Afterwards we went to Chipotle for some quick food and then stopped at Sports Direct so that I could buy my Team GB shirt. We dropped off some stuff at Jourdan's and then we rushed to meet everyone for "We Will Rock You". I should warn you that everyone has seen me just love everything and they all got a kick out of how much I hated this. (During one of the slow numbers I closed my eyes for a nice little rest, other times I was eye rolling, shaking my head and being completely disgusted.)
I don't think it is justified to call it a musical.
I don't know what it should be called.
If they wanted to just sing music they should have just had a tribute band, because the actually singing wasn't bad. Shows have the capability to pull off musicals based around songs, such as Jersey Boys and Mama Mia...there is a legit storyline and it works. This, however, was just stupid.
One of the biggest problems with this show was the lack of motivation for anything. There was hardly ever a purpose for anything that was done. The "Killer Queen" would start to sing a song and there was nothing better to do for staging, I guess, so she would just go on this platform, rise in the air, and it would spin. This happened A LOT. Now that would be completely acceptable if it matched the tone in the show or happened once or twice, or even if it was just to go all out and rock, but to me it was just to be flashy, nothing built up to it, and it was a lack of creativity for it to happen so many times. We the boy and the girl were arguing on stage for a song's length, all they could do was point his/her finger at the other and walk after them. Once they were on the other side of the stage, the other would do the same thing back to take them to the other side. This happened back and forth for five minutes. I am so incredibly sure that the director could have staged that better. I am just so sure.
I should back track here and go to the beginning when I knew that this show was going to be terrible. The intro was on a screen, Star Wars style. Here let me just post what they have on their website and if that doesn't just make it sound dumb, then my opinion will probably have no affect on you anyway.
"The time is the future, in a place that was once called Earth. Globalisation is complete.
Everywhere, the kids watch the same movies, wear the same fashions and think the same thoughts. It’s a safe, happy, Ga Ga world. Unless you’re a rebel. Unless you want to Rock. On Planet Mall all the musical instruments are banned. The Company Computers generate tunes and everybody downloads them. It is an age of Boy Bands and of Girl Bands. Of Boy and Girl Bands. Of Girl Bands with a couple of boys in them that look like girls anyway. Nothing is left to chance, hits are scheduled years in advance.
Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality.
But Resistance is growing. Underneath the gleaming cities, down in the lower depths live the Bohemians. Rebels who believe that there was once a Golden Age when the kids formed their own bands and write their own songs. They call that time, The Rhapsody.
Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see.
Legend persists that somewhere on Planet Mall instruments still exist. Somewhere, the mighty axe of a great and hairy guitar god lies buried deep in rock. The Bohemians need a hero to find this axe and draw it from stone. Is the one who calls himself Galileo that man?
He’s just a poor boy. From a poor family.
But the Ga Ga Cops are also looking for Galileo and if they get him first they will surely drag him before the Killer Queen and consign him to Oblivion across the Seven Seas of Rhye. Who is Galileo? Where is the Hairy One’s lost axe? Where is the place of living rock?
Any way the wind blows."
It sounds like Mom and Dad are angry about pop music these days and they are just going to "show us" in their nostalgic, passive-aggressive way and make a show about it even though they don't know anything about theater. But don't worry, all of their friends will have the same passion and come to cheer them on and talk about "music these days". And they thought naming the main characters Galileo and Scaramouche was a clever idea along with Ga Ga cops and iPlanet which is also called Planet Mall.
The main boy, Galileo, for whatever reason is dressed as a 50's slicker, complete with jeans, a white tee, and leather jacket. Scaramouche is a "goth girl" with black hair and colors in it and some typical clothes. Everyone else has this ridiculous outer space look to them and if you ask me, if that is the norm then why would it ever make sense for these characters to look the way they do? How is this the only boy, or person, on the planet to find a leather jacket and jeans? Why would the girl color her hair if everyone else colors their hair too? And where does she find black goth clothes? It just doesn't make sense...they didn't commit to the world that they created.
And there is this one guy that just does karate moves for no reason at random. But he wasn't ridiculous enough to do it often enough or with a purpose or anything else that might be silly about him. If you are going to be weird, you need to go all out. If he is the comedic relief, then he better be funny and not just have you wonder "wait, what just happened? why'd he do that?"
When the show was done, they put these words on the screen:
"Do you want "Bohemian Rhapsody"?"
And you are supposed to say yes, I guess, and then it says "Oh, alright then" and then they come back out as an "encore". To me that is just a cop-out; that they couldn't fit it in to the rest of the show, so they just slapped it on the end. It could have easily been done in the show too! And I'm sorry but since when is he a poor boy from a poor family? You wouldn't know except we are told in the song. It is just not important information compared to everything else.
If I have mentioned this already, the story/plot/dialogue between songs is simply terrible. It's just like some people got together and tried to string it all together in a terrible fashion. I should also mention that the members of Queen that helped write this show had no interest in musicals before they started working on their own show. That should say something. That's like saying I had no interest in reading or writing but I'm famous and was told I should write a book because it would sell and then just threw in a bunch of pop culture references, ignoring all form and taste and other works. I guess lots of celebrities do that too.
And because I didn't like this show, many people asked if I liked Queen as if that would be the reason I didn't like the musical. So many people in our group only recognized a few songs! Of course I love Queen! I grew up listening to them and many other rock bands. I don't like the show because it is terrible theater. There was the cliche/pop reference in every other word crud, no motivation, no commitment, terrible staging, and a terrible storyline. It could have been good, it really could have. You could take this idea and make it into such a better show. I have never seen a show that I actually hated. I could have just stayed home and listened to Queen (which I had to do afterwards). Mind you, it was not the actors fault, they were good with what they were given. Though having an endless, five time bow was pretty ridiculous.
I'm sure Freddie Mercury would be so sad.
If not, I still stand behind everything I said.
